Portland

Portland Oregon is located in Northwestern Oregon, where the Columbia and Willamette rivers meet. The metropolitan area is made up of several suburban cities all within 15 miles of downtown Portland. As the original commerce center of Oregon, Portland is the largest city in the state and home to a diverse population, culture, recreation, and history. There is always something to do in Portland, from Rose Festival in June, to Skiing in the winter. Geographically there are four counties: Clackamas, Multnomah and Washington in Oregon; and Clark County in Washington, all part of the “greater metropolitan area”. We are sometimes known as the Willamette Valley because we have the Coast Range to the West and the Cascade Range to the East. The population of the metro area is 1.9 million, the largest metropolitan area in Oregon.

The city of Portland has an official population of over 630,000. The State of Oregon web site is: www.oregon.gov. Portland has four distinct seasons but none of them are extreme. Summer averages around 80 degrees, Fall around 50 degrees, Winter around 40 degrees and Spring around 60 degrees. Snow is rare on the valley floor but we do get below freezing 7-10 days per year. Yes, we do have rain, hence all the beauty you expect from Oregon. No, it does not rain all the time. A more accurate statement would be to say the sun doesn’t shine all the time. We have our share of cloudy dry days that may feel like rain to those who are accustomed to sunshine year round. Camping, fishing, hiking, river rafting, biking, snow skiing, wind surfing, and rock climbing. Portland has 9,400 acres of parks, including the smallest park in the world (Mill Ends Park) and the largest urban wilderness (Forest Park). Within an hour’s drive of downtown Portland are the ski slopes on Mt. Hood or the beautiful Oregon coast. The outdoors is what Portland is all about. A lifestyle that appreciates the beauty and respects the land.

Portland has been named the Greenest city in the US for several years. The metropolitan area offers many spectator sports, from the NBA’s Portland Trail Blazers to the WHL’s Portland Winter Hawks. Portland State University Vikings Football, University of Portland’s Championship Soccer program. There are also running events, bicycle events throughout the year, and auto races at PIR in the summer, pro/am golf tournaments, a stop by the Senior PGA Tour and the Women’s PGA Tour annually, and more. Numerous art galleries and museums. Portland boasts a world-class symphony, ballet and opera, as well as a number of theater groups and jazz clubs. The Metro Washington Park Zoo and Oregon Museum of Science & Industry are a must see. The Japanese Gardens, International Rose Test Gardens, and annual Rose Festival, are just a few of the many events held each year. This city boasts amazing displays of art and culture at the Portland Art Museum, the Oregon History Center, the historic Old Town District and Pittock Mansion. The calendar is packed with performances by the Oregon Symphony, the Oregon Ballet Theatre and the Portland Opera, as well as events like Cinco de Mayo (May) and the Rose Festival (June).
